avengement

/əˈvɛndʒmənt/ noun

The inflicting of retributive punishment; satisfaction taken.

Word Origin Avengement comes from Latin vindicare 'to claim, avenge' — the same root that gives us vindicate and revenge. The prefix a- (from ad- 'to') adds the sense of directing that claim toward someone. So avengement is the act of claiming justice. The root vindicare is also behind vindication (clearing one's name) and revenge (claiming back).
