assailer

/æsˈeɪlɚ/ noun

Someone who assails

Word Origin From Latin 'assilire' 'to leap upon' — ad- 'to' + salire 'to leap'. An assailer is one who leaps at you to attack. The root salire is wonderfully bouncy: salient (leaping out), somersault (a leap over), insult (to leap on with words), result (to leap back), exult (to leap out in joy). Even desultory comes from leaping from one thing to another. So an assailer literally 'leaps at' you.
