Word Origin Handsome originally meant 'easy to handle, handy,' from hand + -some (like winsome, fulsome). It later shifted to mean 'good-looking' (perhaps from the idea of being well-proportioned, like a handy tool). Unhandsome is the negative. The root hand gives us handle, handy, handshake. So unhandsome is literally 'not handy' or 'not good-looking.'
