Word Origin Secular comes from Latin saeculum 'age, generation, the world.' Originally, secular meant 'of the world' as opposed to the eternal church. Secularity is the quality of being worldly or non-religious. The same root gives us secularism, secularize. The word saeculum also gave us the phrase 'in saecula saeculorum' (forever and ever). So secularity is about the temporal, the here-and-now age.
