remorsefulness

/ɹɪˈmɔɹsfəɫnəs/ noun

The quality of being remorseful.

Word Origin From Latin re- 'back, again' and mordere 'to bite' — so remorse is literally 'biting back,' the gnawing feeling of guilt that bites you again and again. Remorsefulness is the state of being full of that biting regret. The root mordere also gives us mordant (bitingly sarcastic) and morsel (a small bite of food). The PIE root *mer- 'to rub away, harm' also appears in nightmare — originally a demon that 'bites' you in sleep.
