Word Origin Non- from Latin 'not' and urban from Latin urbs 'city' — so nonurban is simply 'not city-like.' Urban also gives us suburb (below the city), urbanite, urbanize, and conurbation. The root urbs is also in urbanus 'of the city,' which gave us urbane (originally 'city-dweller,' then 'refined'). Non- is a straightforward negator, as in nonstop, nonprofit.
