Word Origin The guide part comes from Frankish *wītan, meaning to show the way, which also gives us guide, guidance, and guideline. The mis- prefix, from Old English, means 'wrongly' — so misguiding is literally 'guiding wrongly.' The same mis- shows up in mislead, mistake, and misunderstand. The PIE root *weyd- is about seeing and knowing, which is why guide originally meant 'to show the way' — you help someone see the path.
