midfield

/ˈmɪd.fiːld/ noun

**Midfield** denotes the central zone of a sports field, the stretch between the defending and attacking ends. In soccer it’s where most of the running, passing, and tactical battles happen. Players stationed there are called midfielders. Midfielders can specialize in breaking up the opponent’s play, launching forward passes, or linking defense and attack. A defensive midfielder drops deep, shielding the back line, while an attacking midfielder pushes toward the opponent’s goal. Central midfielders balance both duties, often covering more ground than any other player. Coaches praise a strong midfield because it controls the tempo and creates scoring chances. Saying a team is weak in midfield instantly conveys a lack of control in that crucial middle ground.

Word Origin A compound of 'mid' (middle) and 'field.' 'Mid' from Old English 'midd' (middle), and 'field' from 'feld' (open country). So midfield is the middle of the field, especially in sports. The 'mid' element appears in 'midnight,' 'midsummer,' and 'midpoint' — all about the middle. 'Field' gives us 'infield,' 'outfield,' and 'battlefield.'
