gonfalon

/ˈɡɒnf(ə)lən/ noun C1

a medieval banner

Word Origin From Old High German gund 'war' and fano 'cloth' — literally a 'battle cloth.' That's why a gonfalon is a banner or standard, often carried into battle. The same fano gives us vane, a weather flag that shows wind direction. A gonfalonier was the standard-bearer, a prestigious role in medieval Italian republics.
