Word Origin From Greek 'barbaros' — which was originally an imitation of unintelligible speech, like 'bar-bar' sounds that foreigners seemed to make. To the Greeks, anyone who didn't speak Greek sounded like they were saying 'bar-bar', so 'barbarian' literally meant 'foreigner.' Over time, it took on the sense of uncivilized, rude, and 'barbarously' means in a barbarous manner. The same root gives us 'barbarian', 'barbaric', and 'barbarism'.
