Word Origin Acrimony comes from Latin acer 'sharp, pungent' — the same root that gives us acrid (sharp smell), exacerbate (make sharper, worse), and acid (sharp taste). Acrimoniously means doing something with sharp bitterness, like a cutting remark. The root *h₂eḱ- 'sharp' also appears in acupuncture (sharp needle) and acrobat (walking on tiptoe, high point).
