uncrowning

/ʌŋkɹˈaʊnɪŋ/ verb

present participle and gerund of uncrown

Word Origin Uncrowning is the act of removing a crown. Crown from Latin corona 'wreath, crown', and un- the reversal prefix. So uncrowning is literally taking off the crown. The same root corona gives us coronation (crowning), coroner (originally an officer of the crown), and coronal. The PIE *ker- meant to turn or bend, as wreaths are bent.
