timbal

[timˈbal] noun C1

a kettledrum

Word Origin Timbal is a drum, from Arabic ṭabl, which also gave us tabla (the Indian drum pair) and tabor (a small drum). It's related to Greek tympanon, source of tympanum and timpani. The word traveled through Spanish timbal and French timbale, also giving us the culinary timbale (a dish shaped like a drum). So timbal is a great example of a word that bounced between cultures, always keeping its drumbeat.
