Word Origin Subscribership is a triple-decker: sub- 'under' (Latin), scrib 'write' (Latin scribere), -er 'one who', and -ship 'state, condition' (Old English -sciepe). So it's the state of being a subscriber — someone who has 'written under' their name, originally signing a document. Subscribe literally meant to write one's name underneath, as in signing a contract. The same scrib root gives us describe, prescribe, manuscript.
