postdate

/ˌpoʊstˈdeɪt/ verb

**Postdate** means to write a date on a document that is later than the day it was actually created, or to schedule something to take effect at a future time. In practice a person might postdate a check so the bank won’t cash it until the specified day, or a contract can be postdated to begin its obligations after a certain milestone. The word works the same whether you’re dealing with calendars, legal papers, or even an email you send ahead of schedule, letting the recipient know the intended point in time.

Word Origin Postdate combines Latin post 'after' and date, which comes from datum 'something given' — originally the first line of a Roman letter: 'given on such-and-such day.' So to postdate is to 'give' a later date. The same root dare gives us data, mandate, donate, and tradition (something handed over). Antedate is the opposite: dating before.
