To hunt (an animal, a piece of land, etc.) too much.

Word Origin A straightforward compound: over- from Old English 'ofer' meaning beyond, and hunt from 'huntian' to chase. So overhunt means to hunt excessively, beyond what's sustainable. The same over- prefix gives us overdo, overwork, overlook—all about going too far. The PIE root *kend- for hunt is also behind hound, so you can almost see the dogs chasing too much.
