Word Origin Layabout is a compound of lay and about, literally someone who 'lays about' — lounging around, not doing much. It's a vivid image: a person just lying about the place. The same lay gives us layer, layout, layoff, and the about comes from Old English onbutan 'on the outside, around'. So a layabout is someone who spends their time lying around.
