floodlighting

/flˈʌdlaɪɾɪŋ/ verb

present participle and gerund of floodlight

Word Origin A compound of flood (from Old English flōd, a flowing of water) and light (from lēoht). A floodlight is a light that floods an area with brightness, like water covering a floodplain. The -ing makes it the action: floodlighting is the process of bathing something in that overwhelming light. The same flood root gives us floodgate and floodwater, while light gives us enlighten (to bring light into the mind) and highlight (to throw light on something).
