dismayed

/dɪsˈmeɪd/ adj

Having the emotion of dismay.

Word Origin Dismayed comes from dismay, which is from Old French desmaier, literally 'to deprive of power' — des- (dis-) + maier (from Latin magare 'to be able'). So to be dismayed is to feel powerless, your courage taken away. The root mag- also gives us may and might. The -ed makes it past participle.
