convulsively

/kənˈvəɫsɪvli/ adv

In a convulsive manner.

Word Origin Convulsively comes from Latin 'convellere', from 'com-' (together) and 'vellere' (to pull, tear). So a convulsion is literally a pulling together — muscles contracting violently. The root 'vellere' also gives us revulsion (pulling back), avulsion (tearing away), and even vellum (parchment made from stretched animal skin). The -ive and -ly suffixes make it an adverb describing that jerky, uncontrolled motion.
