steelwork

/ˈstiɫwɜɹk/ noun

All the steel components of a structure.

Word Origin A compound of 'steel' (from Proto-Germanic 'stahliją') and 'work' (from 'werką'). So steelwork is work done in steel, or a place where steel is worked. The same roots give us 'steelworker', 'steelworks', and also 'ironwork', 'woodwork'. The PIE root for steel is *stak- 'to stand, be firm' — steel is the firm metal.
