Word Origin Skywards points toward the sky, combining Old Norse 'ský' (cloud, sky) with the Old English directional suffix '-weard' (toward). The Vikings gave us 'sky' — originally it meant 'cloud' in Old Norse, but in English it shifted to the whole heavens. The -wards suffix is everywhere: forwards, backwards, upwards. So skywards is literally 'in the direction of the sky.'
