rumen

/ˈɹumən/ noun

**Rumen** is the largest of the four chambers that make up a ruminant’s stomach, perched like a roomy fermentation vat behind the esophagus. It hosts billions of microbes that break down tough plant fibers into sugars the animal can absorb. In cows, sheep and their kin, the rumen acts as a bustling biochemical workshop where bacteria, protozoa and fungi collaborate to turn grasses into volatile fatty acids, the primary fuel for the animal. The chamber’s thick, honey‑combed lining provides a massive surface for nutrient exchange, and its contents—often called the “paunch”—can hold up to 50  gallons of partially digested mash. The term also surfaces in veterinary talk when discussing rumen health, fermentation disorders or the occasional accidental rumination of foreign objects.

Word Origin Rumen is the Latin word for the first stomach of a cud-chewing animal, literally 'paunch' or 'throat.' The verb ruminate means 'to chew the cud' and metaphorically 'to ponder' — turning thoughts over and over. So rumen is the physical organ, while ruminate is the mental action, and ruminant is the animal that does it.
