husbandless

/ˈhəzbəndləs/ adj

Without a husband.

Word Origin Husband comes from Old Norse hús 'house' and búa 'to dwell' — so a husband was originally the 'house-dweller,' the master of the household. Husbandless simply adds -less, meaning without. The same roots give us husbandry (managing the household, later farming) and housebound. The word house itself is a cousin.
