galled

/ˈɡaɬɛd/ adj

Sore; exasperated.

Word Origin Gall comes from Old English gealla 'bile', from Proto-Germanic gallą, from PIE *ǵʰel- 'yellow, green'. The idea: gall is bitter, and to gall someone is to irritate them bitterly. The -ed makes it an adjective. The same root gives us yellow, gold, glow, and cholera (from Greek khole 'bile'). So galled means rubbed raw, like a sore spot.
