driveshaft

/dɹˈaɪvʃæft/ noun

A shaft used to transmit rotary motion.

Word Origin Driveshaft is a compound of drive and shaft. Drive comes from Old English drīfan, from PIE *dhreibh- 'to push, drive', which also gives us drift and drove. Shaft is from Old English sceaft, originally meaning a cut or shaped pole, from PIE *(s)kaps- 'to cut'. So a driveshaft is literally a shaft that drives — a rod that transmits power. The same shaft appears in crankshaft and camshaft.
