To remove dissolved oxygen from (something, such as water or blood).

Word Origin Built from de- 'undo' and oxygen, which itself comes from Greek oxys 'sharp, acid' and genes 'producing' — oxygen was originally thought to be the essential element in acids. So deoxygenate literally means 'to undo the oxygen.' The same roots give us oxidize, hypoxia (low oxygen), and hydrogen (water-producer).
