debilitation

/dᵻbˌɪlɪtˈeɪʃən/ noun

The act or process of debilitating, or the condition of one who is debilitated; weakness.

Word Origin Debilitation is the process of weakening, and it comes from Latin debilitare, from de- 'away' and habilis 'able' — literally 'to make unable'. The root habilis gave us able, ability, and also habit (something you hold to). The same PIE root *gʰab- 'to hold' appears in exhibit (hold out) and prohibit (hold back). So debilitation is about taking away your hold, your capability.
