childlessness

/ˈt͡ʃʰaɪ̯ɫdləs.nəs/ noun

The state of being childless.

Word Origin Childlessness is the state of being without a child, from Old English cild and leas 'devoid of.' The -less suffix is a workhorse: fatherless, motherless, countless. The word child itself comes from Proto-Germanic kilþaz 'womb,' so a child is literally 'womb-product.' The PIE root *gel- also gives us words like 'girl' and 'geld' (to castrate).
