Word Origin Acidly comes from acid, which is from Latin acere 'to be sour, sharp'. The PIE root *ak- means sharp, pointed. So acidly means in a sour, sharp manner. The same root gives us acrid, acute, acumen, and even acupuncture (sharp needle). So acidly is a sharp-tongued adverb.
