wiretapping

/ˈwaɪɝˌtæpɪŋ/ noun B2

the act of secretly listening to phone calls or electronic communications

Word Origin A compound of wire and tapping, from tap 'to strike lightly.' Wiretapping originally meant physically tapping into a telegraph or telephone wire to intercept messages. The word tap comes from Proto-Germanic *tappōną, imitative of a light strike. Wire comes from *wīraz, from PIE *wei- 'to twist, plait' — wire is twisted metal. So wiretapping is literally 'tapping on a wire.'
