Word Origin Retire comes from Old French tirer 'to draw, pull' with re- 'back' — literally 'to pull back,' like withdrawing from active life. Unretired means not having pulled back, or having returned. The root tirer also gives us tirade (a long drawn-out speech) and tire (to become weary, from being pulled out).
