ultraviolet

/ˌəɫtɹəˈvaɪəɫɪt/ adj

**Ultraviolet** is the portion of electromagnetic radiation that lies just beyond the violet end of the visible spectrum, its wavelengths too short for human eyes to see. It carries more energy than visible light and can make white shirts glow under a black light. Because of that extra punch, ultraviolet rays are the culprits behind sunburns and the reason some birds and insects can see patterns invisible to us. Scientists harness UV for sterilizing equipment, astronomers use it to study hot stars, and artists exploit its fluorescence to make hidden designs pop.

Word Origin Ultraviolet is a compound of ultra- 'beyond' and violet, the color. It refers to light beyond the violet end of the spectrum. The ultra- prefix appears in ultrasonic (beyond sound), ultramodern (beyond modern), and ultramarine (beyond the sea). Violet comes from Latin viola, the flower. So ultraviolet is literally 'beyond violet,' light we can't see.
