staffroom

/stˈæfɹum/ noun

A room set aside for the use of staff.

Word Origin A compound of staff (from Proto-Germanic stafaz 'stick, pole') and room (from rūmaz 'space'). Originally, a staff was a stick or pole, then came to mean a group of people supporting an organization (like a staff of office). A staffroom is literally a room for the staff — a space where the team gathers. The same staff root gives us stave (a stick, as in barrel staves), and room gives us roomy (spacious) and all the compound rooms like bedroom, bathroom, classroom.
