contemplatively

/kənˈtɛmpɫətɪvli/ adv

In a contemplative manner.

Word Origin From Latin contemplari, literally 'to mark out a temple space' — con- 'with' + templum 'temple, sacred area.' In ancient Rome, a templum was a space marked out by augurs for observing omens. So to contemplate is to gaze intently, as if observing a sacred space. The suffix -ive makes it an adjective, and -ly turns it into an adverb: doing something in a deeply thoughtful, observing manner. Related words: temple, contemplation, and even template (a pattern to mark out).
