bleaching

/ˈbɫitʃɪŋ/ noun

The process of removing stains or of whitening fabrics, especially by the use of chemical agents.

Word Origin Bleaching comes from Proto-Germanic *blaikjan 'to make white' — the root *blaikaz meant 'pale, shining.' The PIE root *bhel- also gives us blaze, blank, and black (surprisingly, from the same root meaning 'to shine' — black is the color of burnt things). Bleaching is literally making something pale or white by removing color.
