Word Origin From Latin absurdus, literally 'out of tune, discordant' — ab- 'away' + surdus 'deaf, dull.' The idea: something absurd is so off it's like a deaf person's music. Surdus also gives us surd (a mathematical term for irrational, 'deaf' to reason) and the rare surdity. The breakdown ab+surd+ly shows the root surd- meaning 'deaf.'
