Word Origin Touché comes from French touché 'touched,' the past participle of toucher, which goes back to Vulgar Latin *toccare 'to knock, strike.' In fencing, it's the acknowledgment of a hit—literally 'touched!' Now we use it figuratively when someone makes a good point. The same root gives us touch, retouch, and touchstone (a stone used to test gold, hence a standard).
