thyroidal

/θˈaɪɹɔɪdəl/ adj

Of, pertaining to, or affecting the thyroid.

Word Origin Thyroidal comes from thyroid, which literally means 'shield-shaped' — from Greek thyreos 'shield' and eidos 'form'. The gland was named for its shape, like a little shield in the neck. The same root gives us hyperthyroid and parathyroid, and the -al suffix just makes it an adjective.
