It typically appears on open fields, beside fences, or along roads where the breeze finds a place to dump its frozen cargo. The result is a conspicuous, white ridge that seems to have materialized out of thin air. A snowdrift can grow tall enough to hide a driveway, divert traffic, or even bury a lost mitten. Its shape changes with each gust, sometimes spreading in a smooth wave, other times piling into sharp, jagged peaks. Because the wind dictates its size and direction, no two drifts are exactly alike, and they often become the unwelcome architects of winter inconvenience.
