pelvis

/ˈpɛɫvəs/ noun B1, C1

**Pelvis** is the sturdy ring of bone at the bottom of the torso that connects the spine to the legs. It forms a protective basin for the intestines, bladder and, in females, the uterus. Visually it resembles an inverted cup tucked beneath the abdomen. The human pelvis consists of two hip bones, the sacrum and the coccyx, all welded together by strong ligaments. Its shape differs between the sexes, giving women a wider outlet for childbirth. Doctors speak of a “pelvic exam” or a “pelvic fracture,” and anatomists refer to the “pelvic floor” when discussing the muscles that support internal organs.

Word Origin Pelvis is straight from Latin pelvis 'basin, bowl' — because the bone structure resembles a bowl. The PIE root *pel- meant 'container.' Related words are pelvic and pelvimetry (measurement of the pelvis). So the anatomical term is a metaphor for a basin.
