Word Origin A straightforward compound: Old English 'ne' (not) + 'weg' (road, path) — literally 'no way', no path forward. The 'weg' root is the same one that gives us way, away, always, and even voyage (via Latin). The PIE root *wegh- meant 'to go, transport', so a way is where you go.
