Word Origin Northwards is just north with the directional suffix -wards, from Proto-Germanic *-wardaz 'turned toward.' That suffix is everywhere: forwards, backwards, homewards. The PIE root *wert- 'to turn' also gives us versus, verse (turning of a plow), and vertebra (turning joint). So northwards is 'turning toward the north.'
