Word Origin Hauntingly comes from haunt, which originally meant 'to frequent a place' — from Old French hanter, and further back to Old Norse heimta 'to bring home.' The idea of a ghost haunting a place is that it frequents it, making its presence felt. That's why hauntingly describes something that lingers in your mind like a ghost. The same root *kei- gives us home and hamlet.
