Word Origin A folklorist studies folklore — the lore (knowledge, learning) of the folk (people). The word folklore was coined in 1846 by William Thoms to replace 'popular antiquities', combining Old English folc 'people' and lār 'learning, teaching'. The -ist suffix turns it into the person who studies it. The same root for lore gives us learn and learning, so a folklorist is literally a learner of the people's traditions.
