flanking

/ˈfɫæŋkɪŋ/ verb

present participle and gerund of flank

Word Origin 'Flanking' means being on the side of something, like flanking an enemy. 'Flank' comes from Frankish 'hlanca', meaning side or hip, from Proto-Germanic *hlankō. The PIE root *kleng- meant 'to bend' — so the flank is the bendable side of the body. That's why we also have 'flank steak' (from the side of the animal). Related words: 'flank' (noun and verb), 'flanker' (one who flanks). The '-ing' makes it a present participle or gerund.
