earflap

/ˈɪɹflæp/ noun

either of two flaps attached to a cap that cover the ears

Word Origin Earflap is a straightforward compound: ear from Old English ēare (from PIE *h₂ṓws, which also gives us Latin auris and Greek ous) and flap from Old English flappian 'to flap, strike'. So it's literally a flap for the ear. Related: earmuff, earlobe, earring, and flapjack (a pancake that you flip). The flap root also gives us flapper and unflappable (not easily flapped, i.e., calm).
