Word Origin Oxide comes from Greek 'oxys' (sharp, acid) and 'eidos' (form) — originally referring to the sharp taste of acids. Oxygen was named because it was thought to be the acid-former. A deoxidizer removes oxygen. The root 'oxys' gives us oxygen, oxymoron (sharp-dull), and paroxysm (sharp fit). So deoxidizer is literally 'de-acid-former.'
