complainingly

/kəmˈpɫeɪnɪŋli/ adv

In a complaining manner; peevishly.

Word Origin Complainingly comes from complain, which is com- 'intensive' + plain, from Latin plangere 'to strike, beat the breast (in lamentation).' So to complain is literally to beat your chest in grief. The root plangere also gives us plangent (loud, resounding) and plaintiff (one who brings a complaint). The adverb complainingly describes doing something with a whining tone.
