caryatid

/ˌkɛəɹiˈætɪd/ noun C1

a sculpted female figure used as a supporting column in architecture

Word Origin From Greek Karyai, a town in Laconia famous for walnut trees (karyon 'nut') and a temple where women danced with baskets on their heads. The sculpted female columns were named after those women — literally 'women of Karyai'. The same root karyon gives us karyotype, the shape of a cell nucleus that resembles a nut.
